Local Outreach
Plus Power has been developing Great Plains since 2019 with a focus on meeting the needs of the Kansas grid and the customers it serves. In Spring 2024, Plus Power will seek the necessary approvals from Labette County to construct its proposed battery energy storage system, leading public engagement and education about the facility in the process. We are committed to working with Labette County and various local stakeholders including Neosho Township Fire Departments, community members, local stakeholders, and policymakers throughout the development process.
Community Benefits
Operating as a “merchant” project, the facility will bid its services into the Southwest Power Pool market, competing against all generation sources. It will discharge energy during costly peak demand periods, such as extreme weather events, which helps to reduce ratepayer bills. Battery energy storage supports local reliability as intermittent generation resources increase in the state. Great Plains will help make the grid more efficient and reduce the need for expensive additional transmission line construction to serve new intermittent generation.
The Great Plains Energy Storage facility will be a good neighbor and a valuable asset to the surrounding community for decades to come. The project will provide necessary capacity to the region with no air polluting emissions. As a static facility with insignificant traffic and minimal municipal services, the Great Plains facility will have little impact on neighbors. Significant project benefits to the community include:
High-paying construction jobs
Enhanced resiliency from a new, state-of-the-art power resource
Financial benefits for the local community
